musesfool: Reboot Uhura (never tell me the odds)
[personal profile] musesfool
So on Monday the realtor I've been working with sent me 10 listings to choose from and I said I liked five, and so I'm seeing 2 out of those five tomorrow evening (the two most expensive and also the two I was least interested in. funny how that works out. the one that was my fave accepted an offer yesterday and is thus off the market now. Sigh. eta: and there goes my second fave, with an accepted offer. but I'm seeing the last one on Saturday, so there's hope! I like each of these three, just not as much as I liked the other two and also they each have one drawback or another, I guess./eta). I'm trying to keep an open mind, but I'd really like to see the two I like more before I have to make any decisions.

How can it only be Wednesday? Yesterday felt like it was 8 days long in and of itself. Sigh.

What I've just finished
Nothing.

What I'm reading now
Still on Abaddon's Gate. I like it but not as much as the first two books so it's taking me longer to read (the fact that I haven't been getting a seat on the train hasn't helped). I feel like the new characters are not nearly as interesting as Avasarala and Bobbie, though I like Anna and Bull just fine. Melba, otoh... On the plus side, spoilers ) I'm about a hundred pages from the end so I'm guessing there's still some excitement to come.

What I'm reading next
Regardless, I did pick up the next book - Cibola Burn - because I do want to see what happens next. I just also wish we got the POV from the others on the Roci instead of all Holden all the time there.

A less ranty (or so I've tried) and more simple notification from my last post... that can be  C&P / Link to this / whatever....

Over the years many fen have had reasons to remove their fanwork from online, or to seperate their identities (even their fannish ones) from that work.... maybe they are embarassed by their old work, maybe the law in their country (or one they moved to) considers some of their work (eg: chan) to be illegal and they fear for an Ex finding it out and using it to have their children or job or even freedom taken away, maybe they want to file off the serial numbers to turn it into pro-fic...

Pre-AO3 (and even after AO3) many fen had their own websites, and/or used small fandom or pairing specific ones, and they may have protected the site  from being archived into, for example, 'the Way Back Machine' (Archive.Org) by having a simple Robotos.txt excluding them.   Recently, Archive.org (and I have since learned several other 'archive' sites such as Archive.is and Webcite) have decided to ignore these Robotos.txts.    I  was horrified to find that tens of thousands of pages from several domains I own were suddenly public on these websites.... not just all our fanfics in entirity, but tons of personal, professional, hobby related and original-creative works.

As for Webcite, I understand its purpose, but even forFanlore, there is NO REASON to use Webcite to archive EVERYSINGLE STORY on our website (probably as many words or more than all of HP series canon itself) just to provide a refrence that it exists - so if the archival sites have violated your robots.txts / TOS, better check that no one has misused Webcite, Arhcive.org. Archive,is, etc to copy all the work you may have had reason to take down or remove old versions that  had your name on them.  Fortunately, Webcite recognises archival of an entire cite and of certain types of creative or personal work doesn't belong in their archive and you can request it to be taken down if someone has misused their service as a way to keep copies of all their fav fanworks against the creators' wishes.

Please Alert your friends/reading list about this insensitive and illegal violation of personal space/wishes and legal copyright, so that if they took their work down, and wanted it to stay down, they can take action to remove it.

I was expecting The Archive.Org to be backlogged and slow with this, but I am rather pleased to say that if you send a Take Down Request to them, they are not that slow.  It was just a few days before I got a reply and the reply says that all pages should be removed from the public within 24 hrs.  ALthough I am pleased this was addressed promptly, I am still pissed that they did this in the first place.... if they felt Robots.txt didn't work for archives, they should have created and agreed to follow an 'archive.txt' and then provided a transitory time (say a year) for website owners to alll find out word of mouth about this and how to impliment it..   In comments on DreamWidth, I've included a copy of my Take Down notice to Archive.Org with personal info removed, to help anyone who isn't familiar with how to fill them out.

Some of the other archive (Archive.is etc) are acting like they are above international laws, and I'm starting to look at other possible avenues to deal with it (EFF, lawyers I dunno).  If you have experience with this or similar archives that could be of help, please let me know!

ADDITIONALLY, anyone affected by this should be aware that FANLORE, which claims to be about, by and for fen, is disrespecting fen, by using these illegal archives on their wiki.   For example, TELANU left Snarry fandom and removed her work from online. THe Fanlore page states she removed her work from online at the very top, and then in the info box right next to it, it links to Archived links that have copied her entire site!  Demonstratingly, they don't care what her wishes were, just that they can still access her work, in entirity, without knowing if it humiliates her, endangers her/her family, or dashes hopes for turn it into profic.  There is no excuse for ignorance when the fan's wishes are spelled out and Fanlore and its editors are all well aware of it!

In my case, I had it written, on the Splash page and on the index page of all the stories/artwork the TOS ever since Intertexius first opened in 2003 that NO MATERIAL WAS TO BE ARCHIVED ANYWHERE and that if we died or something, someone we trusted had instructions on how to either maintain the site and/or where and how to archive it- furthermore, we are easy to contact if someone really felt something deserved archival or they wanted to use it in a presentation etc (And respectful academics HAVE done so, and I almost always agree to terms we are both happy with).  It wasn't even just screen caps of the splash page or an index of the stories to show what existed on the site/dates- there were links archived copies of EVERY SINGLE PAGE- every single story in entirity, all the artwork created both by us and our fans- EVERYTHING.   Sure, some of it technically is JKR's but its mixed up with a lot of original stuff (eg: Bernice the wandering rock) and those things do belong to us and fall under OUR copyright.  For all their own faults, as an editor on wikipedia since practically forever, I have to say that overall, people on wikipedia have treated me better than those on Fanlore- for example, when I myself uploaded my own original photos for use in an article, the other editors working on that article double checked with me that I understood and was OK with the GNU/CC terms given that my website prohibitted copying/archival, instead of just, YAY STUFF, *TAKE IT* and then goes to my website and takes the rest of it without permission, because, why not.  In comparison, Fanlore just strikes me as a hungry monster that doesn't care who/what it sucks in and hurts; it is just out to grow and profit at our expense/safety.

The burden of staying SAFE should not be dumped on the Fen's shoulders!   Fanlore's very description of purpose and ethics claim that they understand the sensitive nature of fen's ID and connection of that with their work.   Fanlore should be PRO-ACTIVELY following as default, a policy that RESPECTS the fen their wiki is about...  DO NOT LINK TO ARCHIVES THAT IGNORE ROBOTS.TXTs!  DO NOT ARCHIVE MATERIAL IF THE SITE HAS A 'DO NOT ARCHIVE' TERMS OF SERVICE. ... In otherwords, don't break the law, do not endanger fen, respect the people your wiki is built on!  And don't lock/block people/pages for simply taking care of their safety first by removing those links and telling them to go dig through the site's verbose FAQs and info pages to try to figure out who to talk to, and worry about how long it will take to get the endangering material removed!

If you took your work down and find it is now public in Archive.org, archive.is, webcite etc, check Fanlore as well.   Remove any links that are to illegal copies, on the 'talk' page explain your purpose for doing so and that you are sending Take Down notices to those locations.  Sadly, as was I, you may find yourself and/or your pages blocked/locked and being told to go talk to staff like this is some kind of petty text-edit war (Yes, my protecting my copyright and personal safety was labelled by Fanlore as a petty 'Counter-productive edit war....' Even IGNORING this issue of respecting rights and safety, all I did was remove links that would, due to my Take Down Notices be dead within hours-IRONICALLY had I removed the links as soon as they rotted, it would simply be seen as 'clean up', but because I explained on the talk page that this was violating our rights/safety, It was used to attack me instead.)

I don't have the spoons for figuring out who at Fanlore to direct the issue to atm, and given the way people there with the powers to lock/block/etc treated me, I have NO TRUST and NO FAITH in an organisation that treats the people they are profitting off of as shit.   What with my health, bugland's health, my grandmother's health, issues with the county violating ADA law, and now, dealing with a bunch of "we don't need to follow the law" Archives and Fanlore taking advantage of that....  I really hate to think of the stress someone would be under if desperately trying to hide the chan they thought they took offline, and is now publically archived and made easy to find via fanlore, for fear of an Ex using it to take their kids away.

If others try to deal with them, I'd be interested to know what if anything worked, who you had to contact, how you had to phrase things to get yourself protected, and/or if they came to their senses and changed their policies to respect fen and their needs.     I hope to see change, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

ETA: I made a nother post that you can link to; please do as you may have people on your Friends/reading list whose safety, wishes, legal rights may have been violated and it includes info on some of what they can do about it.  http://alchemia.dreamwidth.org/304207.html

I've just lost almost all respect for Fanlore and the WayBackMachine.  Especially Fanlore-    they at least should have the common sense to know that fen who work with certain subjects or live in certain countries, have personal safety issues that should come before a 'must archive everything just in case link rot, so we can grow our website, is the most important thing before the safety/wishes/rights of the people our site is about'  Talk about being exploitive!

And other so-called archival sites that consider themselves not just above robots.txt, but ignore copyright law and TakeDown notices- words cannot express what I wish upon their creators, and the people that use them to violate the wishes and legal rights of other people.

I am absolutely exhausted at the moment because the fucking 'war on drugs' caused our dr to have to, understandably, to not loose their license, have a 3 day wait period between when we are are used to picking up our fentynal, and when we actually COULD pick it up this time.  So we spent 3 agonising days in cold turkey withdrawal from 100mcg/48hr.  I got clonidine to help with the worst of it, but it made it so I couldn't even stand up without passing out so I had to crawl everywhere.   When we finally got our meds, I ended up in withdrawal from the clonodine- which basically meant that I couldn't fucking sleep for almost a whole week straight.

So you want to know more about my hate for Fanlore and Archive.Org, you can read the genesis of my thoughts here:

https://cathexys.dreamwidth.org/508696.html?thread=13464088#cmt13464088

Link direct to my reply.  Yes I also am concerned about 'link rot'.  On sites where link rot is an actual issue (eg due to the LJ migrations with all the meta over thre) but FFS, link rot doesn't take precedent over that of the safety/prefrences of the fen.  Maybe some of them would even have locked those pages but lost access to the accounts, or left fandom and have no clue what they thought would stay on LJ is suddenly getting archived to a dozen different places that they would not want.  I outline one possible solution to respect fen identitiy while preserving pages.

http://aethel.dreamwidth.org/362363.html
(my comment about 4 or 5 down) Disgust with Archive.Org (wayback machine) to after all these years, just BAM stop respecting robots.txt and make tons of stuff public.    I just had to send them Take Down Notices forTENS OF THOUSANDS of pages/images (mostly personal, hobby and business sites; only intertexius is fannish)

Ending finally with this:

http://fanlore.org/wiki/Talk:A_Bittersweet_Potion

(I removed only the archived links for Intertexius , no others, as its up to LJ etc if they will permit archival of public pages.   But it does make me think I'll be using the 'lock' feature a lot more in the future.  Might have some great discussions, and historically I've been of the mind that I welcomed public reading, but I do NOT welcome public copying to where-ever without my knowledge/permission.

I cried my way through Gifted on Saturday, and I can only hope CEvans decides to do a sideline in loving dad roles going forward because it's a good look for him. Needed more Octavia Spencer, though.

And yesterday, I watched Orphan Black: Gag and Throttle
spoilers )

In SDCC news:

+ the Black Panther stuff all looks AMAZING
+ Thor: Ragnarok looks delightfully charming
+ Infinity War looks like a hot mess but features beardy Steve in a black stealth suit and Bucky with a new arm, so I'll get over Natasha's blonde hair, I guess. The ability of any movie to service so many characters, otoh...
+ Justice League looks like two separate movies being smooshed into one - I am into Wonder Woman and Aquaman, as well as Alfred and Jim Gordon, but skeptical of everything else. is this a spoiler? )
+ The Star Wars books in the lead up to The Last Jedi look like fun (CHEWIE AND THE PORGS! Legends of Luke Skywalker! A 16yo Princess Leia book! A Canterbury Tales-like anthology! With authors like Ken Liu and Elizabeth Wein and Saladin Ahmed in addition to Claudia Gray and Chuck Wendig!) I am excite!
+ I like that Captain Marvel is going to be set in the 90s - it explains why they cast someone so young as Carol, though I wonder if that means they'll recast for present-day Carol or what. And Nick Fury will be there! And maybe we could get a Peggy Carter cameo!

I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting atm, but work keeps interrupting. Sigh.

Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

Ways To Give:

Anon reminds us that the 2017-18 school year is coming, and [tumblr.com profile] positivelypt has a post up with links to wishlists for underserved classrooms. You can check out the list, give, and reblog here.

[tumblr.com profile] rilee16 is struggling to cover medical expenses after two head injuries last year, and has a fundraiser running to cover living expenses, previous medical bills, and a recent rent increase. You can read more and help out here.

Help For Free:

Anon linked to [tumblr.com profile] globalsextrendsproject, who are working on an independent research projected aimed at establishing whether there are global trends in stimuli for sexual arousal and the content of sexual fantasies. You can read more and reblog here or fill out the form here. I took a quick breeze through the form and it's primarily short-answer rather than multiple choice, once you get past the demographic stuff.

Activism:

[tumblr.com profile] stabulous has a post up about Welcome Blanket, a project initiated by the Smart Museum of Art in Chicago and anti-Trump craftivists. They are asking people to send handmade blankets to be exhibited at the Smart and afterwards distributed to refugees and immigrants arriving in the US. The hope is to create 3200 blankets to equal the length of the wall Trump wants to build across the US-Mexico border. You can read more at the link above, and find out how to participate at the official site, which includes activism resources whether you want to actually send in a blanket or not.

News To Know:

[personal profile] brainwane linked to Creative Commons, which is offering grants of up to USD$1000 for small projects ("Salons, campaigns, translations, e-books, printing, collaborations, and more") which grow the global commons. They want help increasing discovery, collaboration, and advocacy towards their mission. You can read more and apply for a grant here.

Anon linked to [tumblr.com profile] dr-kara's new comic available on ComixOlogy, [Super]Natural Attraction! Kara is well-known to me as a groovy artist who does cool stuff so while I haven't read this yet I wholeheartedly recommend her work. She has a rebloggable post about it here and you can buy and read it here.

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can post items for my attention at the Radio Free Monday submissions form. Driving with the brakes on
Push (2009); Nick/Cassie (Nick/OFC); adult; 13,650 words
Nick discovers a way to help Cassie see more clearly. It's a little sketchier than he's comfortable with.

I don't actually remember the genesis of this idea, but there's a post in my LJ that says, So I said to [personal profile] angelgazing, "Tell me not to write the story where orgasms make Cassie's visions clearer" and she said, "you should TOTALLY write that story" and two weeks and 13k words later, I wrote the story. Which is basically how these things go when [tumblr.com profile] angelgazing wants me to write a thing, especially if I already kind of want to write it anyway.

content notes: Cassie's 16; one reference to offscreen sexual assault of non-canon characters

All through the writing of this story, Cassie was 15. Cassie was 15 right up until I actually posted. Then I had a conversation with [personal profile] snacky and decided to make her 16 instead. I don't think it makes it better? But maybe some people are slightly less squicked? Idk.

L and I made a spur of the moment decision to see Dunkirk last night - well, as spur-of-the-moment as you can with purchasing reserved seats ahead of time *snerk* - and I have mixed feelings about it. It is beautifully shot and I could watch Tom Hardy spoiler ) all day, but mostly I feel like it took an amazing real life story and didn't deliver on the emotional impact of it. spoilers )

I liked that it was nearly dialogue free (and I didn't mind that I couldn't understand half the dialogue that there was), but I felt that the structure was overly fiddly and unnecessary and it kept me from full immersion (um, pun not intended?) emotionally. Also the music was too loud and there was too much of it.

It also suffers a little from Band of Brothers syndrome in that I couldn't tell the two young dudes apart for most of the story. Once they're both wet so you can't tell which one has curly hair and which one has straight hair, I couldn't tell them apart, and I honestly didn't care that much about them beyond the generic - I mean, I didn't want any of those guys to die, and I felt there was nothing specific about those two to make me care more. spoilers ) (Otoh, casting Harry Styles - who was good, I thought - was a smart move, because I always recognized him, even half-drowned.)

Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh (and James D'Arcy!) were great, as was Tom Hardy. I mean, I would have watched a whole movie where Tom Hardy spoiler ) But overall, it's a B to B+ kind of movie for me. I wouldn't see it again.

If you do see it, I can say it was definitely worth seeing in 70mm, if you have that option. Otoh, if you have a fear of drowning, I don't recommend it for you.

Both L and I had similar mixed feelings. We discussed it on the walk to the bus stop, and my god, I have never sweated as much as I sweated yesterday - it was not a day for walking but I did a lot of it. I was so overheated that I never once felt cold in the movie theater despite being sleeveless, which has never ever happened to me before.

Before the movie we were going to meet at a Mexican place that looked good, but it was so jam packed with people, we ended up at the Cafe Tallulah, where the cheeseburger is fantastic, but again, on a day as hot as yesterday, wtf were the front windows all doing open, so you couldn't feel the air conditioning hardly at all? I never sweated so much in my life while doing nothing.

I still have to review Extra Virginity as well, but I actually liked that one, so it will take longer to compose….

One of the things I did get done yesterday between work, the ball game, and the Epic Sunburn, was finish a slim book of short stories called A City Equal to My Desire by James Sallis. This wasn’t a book that was recommended to me, which means I don’t have to feel bad about truly disliking it. I found it in a keyword search on the library website for books about ukuleles, and it has a short story called Ukulele And The World’s Pain, which admittedly was one of the better stories in the book despite still not being very good.

From what I can tell, he did pick the best story out of the book to develop into a novel, “Drive”, but it is very obviously unfinished in short-story form. Sallis has a couple of ongoing problems in the short story collection, one of which is that he tends to skip the vital information you need in order to know what the fuck is going on. And not in a “the blanks slowly get filled in” way, or in a “your imagination is more terrible” way (though there is a little of that) but just in a way where like…he says something that you understand to be vital to the story but which is missing context, then spends like a page describing the fucking diner someone’s sitting in, and by then any context forthcoming doesn’t get linked back. It’s like being in the middle of a paragraph when you hit the photo plates in an older book – yes the photos are very interesting thank you but I need to finish the thought you were sharing with me before I go back and look at them. I think maybe he thinks this is challenging the reader but it’s not, it’s just annoying and makes what are otherwise interesting premises totally opaque. I shouldn’t need to work this hard for a story about a hit man who decides not to kill a politician.

If the book had a more cohesive theme in terms of the stories, it might be more readable – he clearly enjoys building worlds and then doesn’t quite know what to do with them once he’s built them, so if this was an entire book of “weird and different worlds” ala Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, I would buy in more fully and I think he would have put a little more elbow in. But it’s not. It’s mostly “here’s a really interesting world and a person living in squalor in it does something while being in it”. Also he appears to be fascinated by describing things that are shaped like pi. And a lot of times it feels like he read a wikipedia article on something and wanted to share some knowledge, so he just kind of built a half-assed story around his wikiwander.

And all of this I would probably let go if say, it was something I was noticing in a fanfic writer, or someone who was just starting out, or someone I felt was genuinely trying to get a point across. But there’s this inexplicable sense of arrogance to the collection, a sort of smugness to it that in professional writers drives me up the goddamn wall. Stephen King sometimes falls into the same trap, where it feels like the author believes they don’t have to respect their readers because they are The Writer.

The thing about volumes of short stories is that you keep reading it because sometimes there is a real gem. And there are one or two good stories in the volume, but I don’t know if they’re worth the rest of it.

So my review I guess is mostly me being annoyed, but it boils down to “If you like short stories in the SFF Noir genre, give it a whirl, but if you’re bored with a story none of them get better, so feel free to skip to the next one.”

musesfool: Stephanie Brown as Batgirl (can't hardly wait)
[personal profile] musesfool
I spent last night reading fic where Jason and Cass turn out to be biological siblings, not just adopted siblings, and squee!, that is one of my favorite Batfamily tropes. Plus, there was some awesome Jason-Cass-Steph bonding which I feel canon has repeatedly cheated me out of, even though they would get along like a house on fire (literally, probably, given Jason's involvement and enjoyment in blowing things up). Plus there is some hilarious snark at poor Tim's expense that made me laugh out loud repeatedly. Oh Tim. (There will be recs at the end of the month as usual, but here and here for those of you who are impatient and also not following my pinboard.)

Also, yesterday, my consolation birthday present arrived - a beautiful red patent leather Love Moschino tote bag (wow, there were three left in stock when I ordered mine and now there are none! I'm glad I got there in time!). During the whole epic search for a new bag, I coveted a red patent leather bag, but couldn't find one (or, rather, couldn't find one that was less than, like, $800 and while I'm profligate, I'm not that profligate), since I guess they aren't in style right now? Except it's red patent leather so I can't imagine how it could go out of style? But whatever. On a whim on Wednesday, I checked Zappo's to see if there were any available, and lo and behold, there it was. It's beautiful. It's big and kind of unwieldy (and unpleasantly sticky against the bare skin of my arm in the heat), but I don't care, because it's gorgeous.

Bosses 1 & 3 both admired it as I unpacked it from the box, and they were like, "Are you going to save it for special occasions?" and I said, "Hell no!" (note: I did not actually say "Hell no!" I just said, "no! I bought it so I could use it! Because it is beautiful!") And I recommend to all of you to use your beautiful and special things rather than waiting for some mythical special occasion to crop up, because frequently, you will be waiting forever and never get to enjoy the beautiful thing you bought for yourself. Using a special bag/wearing your beautiful new shoes/opening that expensive bottle of wine - they can all make a regular occasion special, and I recommend you do that rather than wait for some occasion arbitrarily deemed "special" enough to break out the fancy lipstick or whatever. Live your best life whenever you can, people!

Dear co-workers:

* I cannot finish your urgent project in a timely fashion if you keep interrupting me to ask when your project is going to be finished! Please stop!

* We have already done Thing based on all your requirements (and with your approval!) last quarter. We can just update it instead of spending so much time trying to come up with a new way to do it (only to come up with basically the exact same Thing). There is no need to spend hours reinventing the wheel!

* You have to decide whether you need a meeting to happen ASAP or if you need everyone involved present, because it's July coming up on August, and half the people you need will be out on vacation at any given moment and I have no control of that.

* I don't want healthy snacks in the vending machine. If I am driven to getting food from it, it's generally because I want Frito Lay corn chips or terrible plasticky cheap chocolate, not some sort of chip made from beans or some kind of granola bar! WTF?

no love,

me

I am like….90% sure I’m going camping this Friday.

It depends a bit on the weather, but I’m mostly packed, I’ve cooked food that’s currently waiting in the freezer, and I have acquired the third Diane Mott Davidson book to read.

The plan is to leave work early, catch the train to the campground, camp overnight, and in the morning hike out to a different train station further down the line, about a seven-mile trek, to do a longer endurance test than last weekend’s. Then I’ll catch the train home around noon on Saturday.

If something goes wrong, I can catch an evening train home on Friday until eight o’clock, or starting in the morning at 5:30, with little to no exertion. It’s pretty low-risk and I’m well stocked. I don’t have a sleeping pad, but my backpack has a partial one built-in, and I have one arriving tomorrow (though it might be too bulky, we’ll see). And honestly in this heat, I might just sleep on top of my sleeping bag in any case.

Worst case scenario, the campground has heated, lockable shower cubicles with nice big floors. I’ve slept on worse.

Caaaaaaamping! *jazz hands*

I went to bed early last night and I slept like a rock. I should not still be sleepy! Arrgh!

Wednesday reading meme:

What I've just finished
Caliban's War by James S.A. Corey, which I enjoyed a lot, mainly because Avasarala is the best and also Bobbie! ♥ Holden still needs a lot of punching though. Ugh. Why is this guy the main character? Not only is he a dead bore, he's a ridiculously common dead bore!

I like TV!Prax better than book!Prax, I think, but I also think the show compresses the timeline in a way that means I don't get bored with a character having repetitive beats, the way I can, and do in this case, in a book.

What I'm reading now
Still, I picked up Abaddon's Gate and started it this morning, so I'm still entertained enough to continue.

What I'm reading next
The next book in this series, probably. I don't even know what the name of it is. *looks it up* Ah, Cibola Burn.

I also read two really long stories that both turned out to be in progress, which I probably should have noticed but didn't. I mean, when I see a thing is 175K words long, I figure it's done. I mean, who has that much to say in one story? But no. Sigh.

In my recent fanfic readings, I learned that I will nope out of a story if you kill off Wedge Antilles. Which was a surprise to me - how strongly my kneejerk NOPE was - but there you go. Do not want! (I mean, I don't care for any character death in my fic, and generally not in canon either! but I get that some AU premises require it. But like Bartleby the scrivener, I would prefer not to.)

I also learned that I don't really ship Bodhi with anyone but if I did it would have to be Jyn and Cassian. Gotta keep the Star Wars OT3 pattern going, I guess. I just don't find Jyn and Cassian all that compelling. *hands* I'd much rather read about Baze and Chirrut being the most married. (I think Rebels is the only place that doesn't have an OT3, but I am okay with that. I'm already bracing for Kanan and Hera to get an undeserved tragic ending.)

I also realized that in addition to believing that Luke Skywalker is asexual, I believe Anakin is demisexual, and both Leia and Padme are bisexual. Ahsoka is mostly into women except that I also ship her with Anakin (and Rex, a little), so there are exceptions? And Obi-Wan is pansexual and flirting his way across the galaxy at any given moment.

Which is probably more than anyone cared to know about my Star Wars head canons. *snerk*

You've all been watching Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, right? Leia, Rey, Ahsoka, Padme, Jyn! They're so adorable! I might be shipping Leia and Sabine a little bit now too. At least I said, "NOW KISS" at the end of "Bounty of Trouble." *g*

I caught this week's Orphan Black.

Ugh I stayed up way too late last night reading and I'm paying for it now. I just want to sleeeeeeeeeeep.

Five things make a post:

A. I had a most excellent birthday dinner on Saturday evening. L and I went to Uva, which I had never been to before and it was so worth it. They have an adorable little courtyard in back, so we sat outside and drank a lot of wine (A LOT OF WINE) and ate like queens.

2. I was going to make myself a birthday cake, but then I was sad and also I wasn't sure it would be good and I didn't want to make a cake that big and have it be terrible (because then I couldn't foist half of it off on my coworkers). That would just be one disappointment too far. I still want to make it though. It looks amazing. And terrible. But mostly amazing. (I would have made fresh whipped cream though instead of using Cool Whip. I'm not much of a food snob, but fresh whipped cream just tastes better, regardless of authenticity.)

iii. The A Wrinkle in Time trailer looks fantastic.

D. Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Behind the Scenes. I might have burst into tears when Carrie Fisher said, "It's all about family," but you can't prove it!

5. I posted a story for my birthday:

Sing a New Song (@AO3)
Star Wars; Vader, Leia, Luke, Obi-Wan; AU; g; 4,130 words
In which Ben has a bad feeling, Luke makes it to Tosche Station, Leia takes control of the situation, and no one understands how hard Vader's life is.

This is the sequel to Just a Little Bit of History Repeating but probably not the one that people were asking for. *hands* I'm probably never going to write a long involved epic AU where they actually overthrow Palpatine. I'm just not that kind of writer. I just want the fraught family reunions where the Skywalkers get to be all ~dramatic~ at each other.

I don't usually write multiple POV stories anymore, but this one seemed to require it, so we could see Luke's "Wtf?!", Obi-Wan's "I have a bad feeling about this," Leia's ability to roll with the weirdness (and also ameliorate the tension between Vader and Obi-Wan), and Vader's misguided belief that he has control of anything, let alone his kids.

As I said in an endnote on AO3, the title is from U2's "40" (and not the Mountain Goats' "Psalms 40:2"*) and I kind of feel like the title of the concluding story of this little trilogy should also come from Psalm 40 but right now it's tentatively titled "How Soon Is Now" for ~reasons. I still have to figure out how to actually write it. Because I couldn't leave Ahsoka out! The story was originally going to end with that - I felt like Vader saying "no, there's someone else" was kind of analogous to Yoda's "no, there is another," but given that it was Luke's section, I thought he ought to have the last word.

Anyway, I like how it turned out, and I'm glad some other people did too. *g*

*which I still think should have a SPN vid made to it, and from which I already used the title "If I'm Not Beyond Repair" for Bucky, or you know I'd be using that for a Star Wars story ("Lord, send me a mechanic, if I'm not beyond repair" could definitely be a Vader and Luke story, you know? Though I could probably do something with "in the burning fuselage of my days" or even "feel bad about the things we do along the way, but not really that bad" if the right story idea struck. Huh. *adds them to the list of titles to use someday*)

Happy birthday to me! Maybe there'll be a story later? If I can wrangle all the characters into cooperating? Skywalkers! *hands*

I was woken up at about 5 am by the chirping of the smoke/CO2 detector. It needs a new battery. Because that never happens during the day when you could easily replace it. So I have to run to CVS in a bit to get that.

So yesterday, I did an online HIPAA training and then had my mid-year check-in lunch with boss3. Which went well but was also kind of awkward because she ordered prosecco to toast my birthday and then I had to be like, and yes, my co-op application was denied. (She wrote a recommendation for me.) So she smoothly switched to "then maybe this glass of wine will help ease that pain." *snerk* I had an excellent cheeseburger and fries (the fries at Odeon are great) and for dessert, the strawberry-rhubarb crumble with buttermilk ice cream, which was fantastic. And probably not going to be on the menu much longer as rhubarb season is coming to a close.

When I gave L. the news, she insisted we meet up for dinner even though we are going to dinner tonight, and since I was already going to be on the UWS because I was going to see Spider-Man: Homecoming (I hadn't intended to, but my niece saw it and was excited about it, and so I couldn't resist), we met up after the movie so she could commiserate with me. It was nice, despite the fact that the table behind us had three or four little kids who were completely out of control running around and shrieking. She wanted to complain but I didn't let her. I mean, if I had known, I wouldn't have agreed to take the table (there was a choice) but I didn't know, and ugh, who wants unpleasantness? Even if parents should do a better job of corralling their kids in public, especially in tight spaces. At least one of them thanked us for our forbearance when they left.

As for the movie, I liked it. I didn't think it was necessary, and as much as I love Peter Parker (and you know I do), I feel like it should have been a Miles Morales movie (I mean, was Ned not basically Ganke?) and also I kind of felt terrible for Donald Glover.

I personally really liked Amazing Spider-Man, and this movie didn't quite match the emotional response I had to that one. Otoh, in this one, the teenagers mostly looked like teenagers, and it also looked like the real world in terms of diversity in the high school.

spoilers )

I guess I better go to CVS now.

abp-meta.livejournal.com/1279.html#t30207

really cant wait to get posting again... ten yr anniversary for last update, fifteenth for first book's first chapter.... mostly i'm slowed by pain and insomina and watching over bug when they have multiple day long seizures b/c the effing hospital thinks  temporal lobe manifestations are just people ODing on opiates or trying to get some.  Trying to finish basic website layout/server and doing some clean up on the published fics, with new chapter within yr.  thats my goal/focus.  once i get the new site software running i'll prolly take a 'break' and do a Q&A  to help readers catch up after the long hiatus.
